Styling and Shooting My Melin Hat at Drag Brunch
Drag brunch is not the place to blend in.
That’s exactly why my neon green Melin Brand hat has become one of my go-to pieces when I’m shooting or attending brunch. It’s bold, graphic, and unapologetically loud—everything a drag brunch should be.
After wearing it out recently, I decided it deserved its own photoshoot. And because I live in Chicago, that meant one thing: snow.
Photographing a Melin Hat in Chicago Winter
There’s something visually satisfying about photographing neon colors against a winter landscape. The bright green of the hat absolutely pops against the white snow, creating instant contrast with almost no effort.
I dropped the hat directly into fresh snow, letting it sink just enough so it felt grounded rather than staged. The result is playful, unexpected, and very Chicago—summer energy trapped in winter conditions.
From a photography standpoint, the snow worked as a massive natural reflector. Soft, even light wrapped around the hat, letting the color and texture do the heavy lifting without harsh shadows.
Why Melin Hats Work for Drag Brunch (and Beyond)
I’ve found that Melin hats strike a rare balance between performance and style. They’re structured enough to look polished, but durable enough to survive long brunch days, crowded rooms, and unpredictable weather.
What really makes them stand out for me, though, is the color selection. The bolder Melin colors—like this neon green—pair incredibly well with my Raskol brand workout gear, which also leans heavily into loud, saturated hues.
Together, they create a cohesive look that feels intentional rather than accidental:
- Athletic but styled
- Comfortable but camera-ready
- Loud without feeling messy
It’s a combo that works just as well at drag brunch as it does running errands or heading to the gym.
Personal Style as a Creative Tool
As a photographer, I think personal style matters—especially when you’re embedded in creative spaces like drag brunch. What you wear becomes part of how people perceive you, how you move through a room, and sometimes even how comfortable others feel in front of your camera.
This Melin hat has become one of those pieces that feels like an extension of my brand: bold, playful, and not afraid of color.
And honestly? Neon looks even better when it’s surrounded by snow.
